Executive Summary

We have identified that the primary root need for the apple peeler is to eat an tasty apple. The user does not want to peel an apple and the reason they do is because they do not want to taste the bitterness from the skin. The market research has helped us to identify the top stakeholder needs such as maintainability, safety, aesthetic, performance, ease of use and value for money. We realized that the current apple peelers out in the market do not fully satisfy these needs and there is a huge potential to enter the market with a new design that can better fulfill the needs.

After identifying the root need of an apple peeler we discussed as a group and generated over a hundred brainstorming ideas for potential improvements and modifications to an apple peeler. We then narrowed this list of ideas down into 5 top design concepts, which are the Foldable Peeler, Motorized Peeler, Peeling Gloves, Children's Peeler, and the Apple Vending Machine with Built in Peeler. With the aid of the Pugh Charts, we compared our design concepts with a datum and several competitor products. Through analyzing and contrasting the pros and cons of the products we have agreed that the Apple Vending Machine with Built in Peeler is the most feasible and has the greatest potential among our 5 concepts. This is a typical vending machine but with automated peeler/corer/slicer. This concept will allow users to choose between cored/non-cored, sliced/non-sliced and peeled/non-peeled apples to accommodate wide range of users. A Gantt Chart is included to organize the future tasks and to better estimate the required time for the project.

Our new concept will meet the needs of the consumer not previously met, and everyone and anyone can eat tasty apples whenever they want, where ever they want it.

Market Research

We have looked at various competitor products and analyzed their pros and cons to determine the true top stakeholder product needs.

Competitor Products

The following reviews for the three competitor products were collected by

1. interviewing users who have used the standard peeler and/or;
2. researching online reviews of each competitor products.

Any contradictory statements are due to personal preferences of each user.

Standard Peeler

Pros

Summary of Market Research

In summary, the users were not satisfied with the apple peeler products currently out in the market. Experiences gained by the user from the competitor products are positive in some areas, negative in all other. There seem to be no products which fulfill the top stakeholder product needs listed above at a satisfactory level.

The Hand Held Peeler is the simplest and easy to use, but the chances of the user injuring him/herself is not negligible. The electric peeler has a very high standard in term of performance, but the price is very expensive, so only some heavy users will gain high value for money. The standard peeler is a very good product for its price and its value for money is very high. The overall quality of this product is satisfactory, but it fails to address some stakeholder needs such as maintainability and safety. There are no household peelers which address all of the stakeholder needs.

This lead us to conclude that we have a very good chance of entering the market of house-hold or commercial apple peeler.

Design Concepts

  • Concept1: Foldable peeler
  • Foldable peeler allows you to bring the apple peeler with you wherever you go. Also, it takes less storage place than the original peeler. By making the grove channel, the suction cup and the main body foldable, we are able to minimize the size of the apple peeler.
  • Pros: High portability | Cons: Higher manufacturing price, harder to use

  • Concept2: Motorized peeler
  • Considering for those people who need to peel a lot of apples, for instance, people who makes apple cider or apple pies, a motorized peeler will come in handy. Motorized peeler basically replaces the handle by a motor. So what one needs to do is to press a bottom, and a peeled apple would be ready to go.
  • Pros: Easy to use and more efficient | Cons: Higher manufacturing price, low maintainability

  • Concept3: Bendable blade integrated into glove
  • This concept is inspired by Potato Glove. Instead of using a single blade, we integrated several bendable blades into glove. What one needs to do is to hold the apple with the gloves on and scrub the apple skin.
  • Pros: Low manufacturing price, easy to use, high portability | Cons:Dangerous, really hard to clean up the blades

  • Concept 4: Apple peeler for children: Disney theme, chocolate/caramel coating
  • Do you want your children to peel an apple for you when you are so exhausted after work? An apple peeler with Disney theme case would make the peeling process more enjoyable for your children! Moreover, with the chocolate/ caramel coating system, you can make your favorite chocolate caramel apple at home anytime.
  • Pros: More appealing, fun to use | Cons:High manufacturing price, low portabiltiy

  • Concept5: Vending Machine with build-in peeler
  • APPLICIOUS vending machine with build-in peeler makes apple-lovers’ life so much easier. Whenever you are craving for an apple, just go to APPLICIOUS vending machine, and you will have a fresh peeled apple in 30 seconds. Other options of fruits or chocolate/caramel coating are also available.
  • Pros: Fast and easy to use, can apply to different kind of fruits | Cons:

Design Comparison

A Pugh Chart allows us to systematically make comparisons between different products. By comparing and contrasting the strengths and weaknesses of the ideas we will be able to better evaluate the features of the designs and filter for the best concept. A standard Pugh Chart includes: Criteria, which state the top customer and stakeholder needs; Weights, the relative importance of the criteria; Datum, an existing product for referencing and benchmarking; and Net Score, a non-scientific score summarizing the findings of the chart. The ratings are symbolized by "0", "+", and "-". "0" indicates that the concept has the same rating as the datum; "+" means the concept is more favorable than the datum; "-" means the concept is less favorable than the datum. The number of "+" and "-" indicates the degree of favorability of the concept.

For our five top design concepts all but one of them (Design 5: apple vending machine with built in peeler) fall into the domain of household products. Therefore, instead of including that concept into the same Pugh Chart as the others, which would be meaningless, we created a separate Pugh Chart incorporating Design 5, which focuses on comparing pros and cons between vending machines. The Pugh Chart are as follows:

Pugh Chart 1 - household peelers

The first Pugh Chart compares Design 1-4 with a standard peeler and two competitor products in regards of Price, Safety, Maintainability, Easy to use, Efficiency, and Portability. Among our 4 concepts Design 3, the Peeling Gloves, have a net score of 2. This indicates that this concept is slightly better than the standard peeler. The Peeling Gloves are easier to use, are very portable, and is also easy to maintain. Our 3 other designs however, have scores of zeros and -6 respectively. Although the Foldable Peeler increases the portability of the product, it also makes it less easy to use and a bit more pricey. The Motorized Peeler increases the efficiency of peeling but it is also less portable and not as easy to maintain. The Children's Peeler, on the other hand, does not increase the value of the product in any of the six criteria but instead increases the price and decreases the portability of the product. This is the reason for the negative score. The first competitor product, the Hand-held Peeler has a net score of 4 while the second competitor product, the Electric Peeler has a net score of 3. Comparing to the standard peeler, the Hand-held peeler is cheaper, more portable, and is more easy to maintain. The Electric Peeler, on the other hand is easier to use but also more expensive.

In Pugh Chart 2 comparisons among different vending machines are made. Our Design 5, the Apple Vending Machine with Built in Peeler is being compared with a standard vending machine and a Fresh Fruit Vending Machine. Under the criteria of Price, Easy to use, Healthiness, Consumption, and Aesthetics, Design 5 scores 11 while the Fresh Fruit Vending Machine has a score of 4. The reason our design is better is because the apple being sold is healthier and is also in a form that makes consumption easier. Without the skin no potentially harmful chemicals (for instance fertilizer) is taken by the consumer. Also, with the skin peeled it means that the apple is ready to be consumed, the user does not have to worry about washing the apple or cleaning it in any way. In addition our design is also more appealing to the user in terms of appearance.

With the aid of the Pugh Charts we can easily tell that the Apple Vending Machine with Built in Peeler is the obvious choice for the next step of our project as it scores the highest point out of all the concepts and existing competitor products.

Project Plan

Gantt Chart

Gantt Chart is convenient for project planning.
1) Divides a complex project into smaller tasks.
2) Organize tasks in a chronological order.
3) Estimates how long a project required.
4) Allow user to know what tasks are dependent on other tasks to be completed first.

Findings and Recommendations

We have discovered that the primary need of the user is to eat an tasty apple. When using an house hold apple peeler, user is most concerned with maintainability, safety, aesthetic, performance, ease of use and value for money. The products currently out in the market does not fulfill the need of the users. However, our Apple Vending Machine with Built in Peeler will address all of these needs and more.

The user will no longer take part in maintaining the device. The peeling mechanism is safely stored inside the vending machine so the chance of injury in minimal. There is no limit on the possible changes to the aesthetics of the device, almost any shapes and sizes can be accommodated. The device will consistently give very high performance for any user. It is extremely easy to use, all it takes is a coin and a button. Finally, the value for money is very high since the user only pays for the price of the apple and only when they want it. Another factor that make this device attractive is that it promotes healthy living, which is becoming more and more important.

You are at school, you need a snack and you see line of vending machines. Some sells soda, some sells chips, some sells chocolate bars. You are hungry but you have been concerned with your weight recently. You prefer fruits such as apples but you never buy from the campus food vendors because you need apples cored and peeled. At the end of the line, you notice our Apple Vending Machine with Built in Peeler. Now with our new concept, you can eat healthy, tasty apples quickly, easily, where ever and whenever you want it.
