The mission of the Design Theory and Methodology Committee is to facilitate and enhance the development of design theories and the methods that grow from them.

For IDETC 2008 we received 97 papers, of which 47 were selected for presentation; ten of the accepted papers had an industry collaborator and 20 were from international authors. The 2008 DTM Best Paper Award went to Ian Tseng, Jarrod Moss, Jonathan Cagan, and Kenneth Kotovsky for their paper, “Overcoming Blocks in Conceptual Design: The Effects of Open Goals and Analogical Similarity on Idea Generation.” The Committee would like to thank Li Shu and Bob Paasch for their able service as Conference Chair and Papers Chair, respectively. For IDETC 2009, Bob Paasch will serve as Conference Chair and Dan McAdams as Papers Chair.

New officers for the two-year term beginning on July 1, 2009 were elected at the annual committee meeting at IDETC 2008. Li Shu of the University of Toronto will serve as Chair, and Janis Terpenny of Virginia Tech as Vice-chair. Dan Frey of MIT will serve as both Secretary and Webmaster.

The DTM Committee welcomes the participation of all who are interested. For more information, visit the Committee’s website at http://function.device.mst.edu/asmedtm.
