Assistant Professor - Vacancy Announcement

The Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla) anticipates one or more tenure track openings at the assistant professor level beginning as early as Fall 2008. Successful applicants must have a strong background in engineering design and enthusiasm for creativity and innovation. Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in an area that is appropriate to support research and teaching in engineering systems and design. Possible research expertise areas and career experiences include, but are not limited to: robotics, computational processes in engineering design, vehicle simulation, energy systems, industrial design, human factors and mechatronics. Solid oral and written communication skills are essential as well as motivation to inspire young engineers. A background sufficient to teach undergraduate engineering mechanics courses, as evidenced by a BS or MS in mechanical, aerospace or civil engineering or other closely related field, is desirable. Documentation of good teaching is highly desirable.

The Interdisciplinary Engineering Department offers (since 2005) a BS in Interdisciplinary Engineering and has MS and Ph.D. program proposals pending. The successful candidate(s) will play an integral role in developing courses for the new programs and will be expected to develop an appropriate research program to support this effort. Other duties will include appropriate committee service, advising, and teaching. The department also teaches fundamental engineering design and mechanics courses, uses new and imaginative teaching approaches and fosters a truly interdisciplinary environment.
