Jeremy J. Michalek (me-HA-leck), aka. "J", is a professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering & Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and Director of the Design Decisions Laboratory.

Brief Biography

Jeremy J. Michalek is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and the Director of the Design Decisions Laboratory. His research and teaching areas include design, optimization, product development, business, econometrics, and environmental policy.

Jeremy earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Engineering Design from Carnegie Mellon in 1999, where he received research honors for implementation of product design shape grammars. Moving to Ann Arbor, he received an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2001, with thesis work on interactive design optimization tools for architectural layout, and he earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2005 for dissertation work using systems optimization to coordinate engineering design decisions with business and public policy models. In 2005 he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Michigan before beginning his current faculty position at Carnegie Mellon University, where he founded the Design Decisions Laboratory. His current research focuses on systems optimization and modeling of market systems in design, including consumer preference measurement, competition, and environmental policy.

Jeremy teaches courses in design, product development, and optimization, and he created a new graduate course in quantitative methods for product design and development. He has industry experience at Xerox, General Motors, and Linear Systems Corporation. He has earned a number of awards and fellowships including the Best Paper Award at the American Society of Engineers Design Automation Conference, the Elaine Harden Award for Outstanding Leadership for his role in founding the education committee of Engineers Without Borders at the University of Michigan, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award for codevelopment of a new course in Engineering for Community. Jeremy is a member of ASME, AIAA, and INFORMS as well as the Green Design Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
