Ching-Shin Norman Shiau is a research assistant in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He is also a research member in the NSF MUSES project and Green Design Institute. His primary research directions are engineering design optimization, market demand modeling and environmental policy. The specific research subjects in his study include: (1) Design for market systems: Use quantitative method to measure and predict consumer choice in the marketplace to optimize engineering systems for profitability. Apply game-Theoretic method in design decision making to obtain optimal design under market competition. (2) Policy implications in design decisions: Develop integrated model of design, policy and market systems, and analyze how public policy affects product design in the marketplace. (3) Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology: Evaluate the economic and environmental benefits of PHEVs, and examine corresponding implications.

Before coming to the United States, he received a B.S. degree in National Chung-Hsing University, and an M.S. degree in National Taiwan University, with thesis work on tolerance synthesis for reliability and quality. Both degrees are mechanical engineering majored. Between 1997 and 1999, he served as a logistic officer at the rank of second lieutenant in the Taiwan R.O.C. Army. During 1999-2004, he was a R&D engineer in BenQ Corporation, one of the leading digital device providers in Taiwan, with the responsibility of designing printer components and solving manufacturing and production issues. He participated in several printer development projects, including the first high-speed color laser printer OEM project in Taiwan computer hardware industry in 2001. He has five printer-design related patents in the US, Taiwan and China. He was awarded Employee of the Year in 2002, and a member of the Outperformed Project Team in 2001.

He is a member of ASME, SAE, INFORMS and TRB.
