DED Executive
Message from the Chair
Ahmed Shabana, Design Engineering Division Chair
The Design Engineering Division (DED), established in 1945, is one of the largest and most active divisions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). DED has the vision of "covering the art, science, and application of design engineering and to facilitate transfer of design engineering technology between industry, academes and government through programs and publications". Guided by this vision, DED has the mission to "develop, promote, encourage, and support its members and technical committees in their quest for technical excellence and professional success in their respective fields. DED provides the necessary processes and mechanisms to span new initiatives and identify emerging technologies through technical meetings, publications, and member interest activities".
DED publications, conferences and activities are sponsored by its dedicated volunteer members who contribute significantly to their society and ensure its success by serving in various DED technical committees. The division currently has the following 12 technical committees: (1) Design Automation, (2) Design Education, (3) Design for Manufacturing, (4) Design Theory and Methodology, (5) Fastening and Joining, (6) Mechanisms and Robotics, (7) Power Transmission and Gearing, (8) Reliability, Stress Analysis and Failure Prevention, (9) Vehicle Design, (10) Vibration and Sound, (11) Micro/Nano Systems, (12) Multibody Systems & Nonlinear Dynamics. These technical committees sponsor many of the division activities including conferences at the annual DED International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETCs) which has grown over the last few years to be one of the most successful ASME conferences, attracting a large number of eminent scholars, researchers and practicing engineers from academia and industry. This international meeting, which is organized by a group of dedicated volunteers and ASME staff members, will be held this year in San Diego, California. DED technical committees promote design engineering scientific research and transfer of technology by sponsoring several excellent journals that include (1) Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering (co-sponsored with CIE Division), (2) Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics, (3) Journal of Mechanical Design, (4) Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics, (5) Journal of Medical Devices (co-sponsored with Bioengineering Division), (6) Journal of Vibration & Acoustics. DED and its technical committee sponsor several prestigious awards that recognize eminent scientific contributions and dedicated member services. DED members who are interested in serving as members of the DED technical committees or become familiar with the committee activities and operations can visit the DED website: http://divisions.asme.org/ded/.
I would like to thank our outgoing Chair, Dr. Kazem Kazeronian for the dedicated service and skilful leadership. We were fortunate to have a very effective leader as Kzem who will continue his service to the division as the “Past Chair” of the DED Executive Committee. I would like also to thank Dr. Judy Vance, the outgoing Past Chair, for her excellent service to the division. Kazem and Judy’s mentorship and advice are very much appreciated. I look forward to working with a group of excellent volunteers, Drs. Hamid R. Hamidzadeh, (Buddy) W. Clark, Vijay Kumar, and Zissimios Mourelatos, who serve as members of the DED Executive Committee. I would like to welcome Drs. Kurt Anderson, Wei Chen, and George Fadel as the new members of the DED Executive Committee. DED operations and activities are supported by a group of dedicated ASME staff. I would like to thank all ASME staff who provided DED with the support needed. In particular I would like to thank Mr. Richard Ulvila, Ms. LaShion Pettiford, and Ms. Erin Dolan.
I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the DED Chair, and I look forward to having another successful year for our division.

The Mechanisms and Robotics Committee has the mission of promoting advances in research and education in the theory, design and applications of mechanisms, machines, robots and mechatronic systems. Areas of interest include: kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms, analysis of robotic systems, design of linkages, cams, gears, transmissions, bio-inspired machines, mechatronics, compliant mechanisms, and micro and nano machines.
The flagship conference for this committee is the Mechanisms and Robotics Conference, which is the largest conference in the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC).
The main journal for this committee is the Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics. (In recent years, it was the Journal of Mechanical Design).
This past year, 2008-2009, was another very active year for the Mechanisms and Robotics Committee. A summary of the main highlights are as follows:
- The committee was responsible for the oversight and organization of the 2008 Mechanisms and Robotics Conference which consisted of keynote presentations, symposiums featuring technical papers, and student design competitions.
- The committee recognized Dr. Clément Gosselin, Director of the Robotics Laboratory at Laval University, Canada, with the DED Mechanisms and Robotics Committee Award for cumulative contributions to the field of mechanism design and theory.
- The Mechanisms and Robotics committee has worked diligently on establishing a new journal which would focus on the central mission of the committee. The new journal is entitled the ASME Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics, with Dr. J. Michael McCarthy, University of California, Irvine, as the founding editor. The first volume of this journal appeared in February of this year.
- The committee established a new website wiki site that reflects the breadth of our activities and the excitement that exists in our community. The server is provided by the University of Pennsylvania through Professor Vijay Kumar. An alternative address for the website is http://alliance.seas.upenn.edu/~asmemr/cgi-bin/pmwiki/index.php?n=Main.HomePage. It is now possible to have several people (or all of the committee members) to update the content of this site.
- The committee has also established a ASME Mechanisms & Robotics Video Web-Portal. Submissions to this YouTube channel can be made through Video sub-committee website.
Multibody Systems and Nonlinear Dynamics Committee
Kurt Anderson, MSND Chair
The mission of the Technical Committee on MSND is to foster experimental, symbolic, computational and analytical activities pertaining to multibody systems and nonlinear dynamics and control and other related areas. The committee consists of members from academia and industry. One of the main activities of the committee is to organize the Biennial International Conference on Multibody Systems, Nonlinear Dynamics and Control (ICMSNDC) at IDETC. At the upcoming &th ICMSNDC the D'Alembert Award for significant contribution to the field of Multibody Systems will be presented to Professor Edward Haug (Emeritus) of University of Iowa. Similarly, the Lyapunov Awards for significant contribution to the field of Nonlinear Dynamics will go to Professor Philip Holmes of Princton University. The upcoming 7th ICMSNDC, to be held in San Diego CA, will hold a new student paper competition. Students working in the fields of multibody systems, nonlinear dynamics and control are encouraged to submit papers to this competition. The student must appear as the first author on the paper to be considered. The MSND-TC is also closely affiliated with the ASME Journal of Computational and Nolinear Dynamics. Under the leadership for Professor Subhash Sinha, this journal is flourishing.
Power Transmission and Gearing Committee
Ahmet Kahraman, PTG Committee Chair
The primary activity of the PTG Committee is organizing the ASME Power Transmission and Gearing Conference at the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences. It organizes a larger-scale international conference every four years and a smaller mostly domestic conference in between. The committee is currently organizing one of its smaller conferences that will be held as part of the 2009 IDETC in San Diego. Dr. Ahmet Kahraman and Dr. Avinash Singh will serve as the Conference and Technical Program Chairs, respectively. A total of 48 papers have been received for this conference on topics such as design, dynamics, durability, manufacturing and tribology of gears and power transmission systems. A paper review committee has been formed for processing these draft papers. The PTG Committee met several times over the period of last six months to review and update the by-laws of the Committee that was in effect since early 1990s. The updated PTG by-laws have been posted on its newly designed website at http://www.asmeptg.org/ For more information on the PTG Committee and its forthcoming activities, please contact Dr. Ahmet Kahraman (kahraman.1@osu.edu) or visit our website at http://www.asmeptg.org/
