We purchased a used industrial pump, originally manufactured by GE Motors and Industrial Systems. A search of the model number was inconclusive however several features of the pump can be inferred from its appearance and performance.

This pump has two sections, the electric motor and the impeller housing. The motor is 115/230 volt and A-C  power. The pump housing is made of steel and encases the impeller blades which have an approximate rotation rate of 3450 rpm (label on product). The pump appears to be a centrifugal pump, because the inlet is located at the center of the pump housing and the outlet is located at a 90 degree angle to the inlet, on the side of the housing. It is also most likely a single stage pump (one set of impeller blades) due to the shape of the housing.

Centrifugal pumps work by converting mechanical work from the spinning impeller blades (powered in this case by the rotation of the electric motor) into kinetic energy of the fluid, thus creating a pressure gradient through the pump and creating flow . The principle of forced vortex flow states that when a fluid is acted upon by an external torque, the pressure head of the fluid is increased. The rise in pressure at any point in the fluid is “proportional to the square of the tangential velocity of the fluid” (Centrifugal, 2009)at that point, and therefore the greatest pressure differential will occur at the largest radius, at the end of the impeller blades. This drives the fluid flow radially outward through the outlet.  Centrifugal pumps can be multistage, or have multiple sets of impellers. The impellers are placed in series to generate a bigger pressure differential or in parallel to generate greater flow rates. (Centrifugal 2009)

The pump must be primed (have its housing initially filled with water) for it to operate correctly because centrifugal pumps cannot generate enough suction force to draw water into the housing. Once primed, the pump can be turned on by plugging it in and it will begin to circulate water (see figures). Our pump model also has a pressure-shut off switch, causing the pump to shut down if pressure becomes too low. This is most likely to minimize the damaging effects of cavitation, which was observed during test runs. Cavitation occurs when the pump generates insufficient Net Pressure Suction Head, causing areas of different pressure, which cause the formation and collapse of bubbles in the fluid. (Centrifugal, 2009)
