The phrase design for market systems (DFMS) refers to a set of tools, methods, and approaches to model and predict the role that markets play in engineering design in order to support informed decision-making and produce better products. DFMS can be considered part of the Design for X toolbox that considers downstream impact of design choices in areas such as:
- consumer demand
- product pricing
- competitor reactions
- retailer decisions
- commodity prices
- economic growth
- public policy
