Orkun Karabasoglu

Orkun Karabasoglu earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He works as a researcher at Vehicle Electrification Group and Design Decisions Laboratory directed by Professor Jeremy Michalek. Orkun develops innovative approaches, theory, computational tools and mechatronic devices at the intersection of design optimization, intelligent control and machine learning with applications on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and energy systems. He is a member of ASME and AIAA organizations.

Brief Biography

Orkun Karabasoglu was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1984. He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, under the guidance of Professor Jeremy Michalek. He received his second M.S degree in Sabanci University, Turkey where he worked as a research assistant under supervision of Professor Gullu Kiziltas. He received double B.Sc. degrees in mechatronics engineering with honors from Kocaeli University, Turkey and Bochum University of Applied Sciences, Germany. His PhD dissertation committee members were Prof. Jeremy Michalek (Mechanical Engineering), Prof. Chris Atkeson (Robotics Institute), Prof. Illah Nourbakhsh (Robotics Institute) and Prof. John Cagan (Mechanical Engineering) of CMU.

His primary research areas include:

  • Optimal design and control of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
  • Control systems and machine learning for energy systems
  • Design automation (optimal design of mechatronic, electromagnetic and biomedical systems)
  • Supercapacitor-battery systems control optimization
