Talk:Staple gun redesign

We received your second report, and you have some interesting ideas. Your survey results were interesting, and you have some great observation pictures, but what did you learn from them? The formatting around these pictures was somewhat awkward to follow. You have a nice list of improvement ideas.

With respect to your concepts: The retractable handle extension is interesting, but why not just make the handle longer? Is this just for storage purposes? What are the implications for ergonomics if people will use the stapler potentially in either position? How does the extension lock into place, and how do you avoid pinch points? The safety mechanism is interesting – you may be able to use the safety button as an alignment locator as well. Will this restrict any safe, legitimate, common uses for the stapler? The ratcheting mechanism is also interesting – if coupled with changes in lever geometry, this could reduce the force required to operate the stapler – one of the biggest complaints. If the design is coupled with a release mechanism – how will this work and what is the interface? Would the entire shape be redesigned, since the release mechanism is the only component needed during the projection of the staple? A design with preloaded energy such as this is potentially dangerous and would require a safety mechanism – maybe a variation of the one you suggest as concept 2. This idea could make the process slower and more cumbersome, but the reduction in required hand strength could increase our audience. It may also be that the best solution will be a two-pull system where the first pull is preloading and the second pull is to finish loading and fire the staple. In such a case, clear indications to the user about whether the stapler is preloaded would be necessary as well as a mechanism to unload without firing and prevent opening of the stapler drawer when preloaded. Finally, the modular attachment set is interesting as well, but do you think there would be a market for the attachments described? You have an interesting Pugh chart, but what conclusions did you draw?

We suggest that you pursue the ratcheting concept with some type of safety mechanism in the next phase. This will require substantial redesign oriented around the triggering mechanism and/or safety with respect to preloading. Also, user studies will be necessary to determine how this changed interface will alter experience with the product and to design the interface to be as intuitive and comfortable for extended use as possible without adding weight or size. Analysis and testing of the reduced required hand strength will also be necessary to demonstrate the product.

We look forward to seeing your prototypes in the design review.
