Ching-Shin Norman Shiau is a Ph.D. student of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and a research member of the Design Decisions Laboratory. He is currently a member of the ASME and INFORMS.

Brief Biography

Norman Shiau is a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon University, under the guidance of Professor Jeremy Michalek. He is also a research member in the MUSES project. His primary research areas includes:

Before coming to the United States, he received a B.S. degree in National Chung-Hsing University, and an M.S. degree in National Taiwan University, with thesis work on tolerance synthesis for reliability and quality, both mechanical engineering majored. Between 1997 and 1999, he served the compulsory military service in the Taiwan R.O.C. Army, as a battalion logistic officer at the rank of second lieutenant. He received the Army Medal of Honor when discharged from full two-year services. During 1999-2004, he was a mechanical design engineer in BenQ Corporation, one of the leading digital device providers in Taiwan, with the responsibility of designing printer components and solving manufacturing and production issues. He participated in several printer development projects, including the first hi-speed color laser printer OEM project in Taiwan IT industry in 2001. He has five printer-design related patents in the US, Taiwan and China. He was awarded the Best Employee of the Year 2002, and also a member of the Outperform Project Team in 2001.
